Spring is almost here

I’ve only been up to the allotment a couple of times since late October last year.  I think Winter has been fairly mild so far, well where I am anyway, not much frost or snow.  We had a lot of rain but i’ve been lucky enough to escape the flooding, which has caused such misery for other people in the UK.

After a blustery night, the rain did stop today and the sun came out, at times it almost felt warm.  I’ve been meaning to prune the gooseberry bushes I have so headed to the plot to see how it had fared with the deluge.

My green manures are growing quite nicely, the garlic I planted in October is popping through and my little patch of rhubarb has come up in just a couple of weeks.

I’ve pruned both gooseberry bushes , I just hope I’ve done it right as there’s not much left?!?  I cut out all the dead wood near to the ground and opened it up.  I also cut any branches that crossed.  Make sure you wear some decent gloves, mine where very think but i still got prcked ans scratched.  Here’s a before and after…

Well, I’ll just have to see what happens come spring… fingers crossed.
